Seeds
Our next goal is to establish a wide range of agricultural seeds from imported Hybrids (rice, maize, sunflower, fodder, fruits and vegetables etc.) to locally produced seeds (cotton, wheat, rice). We have been instrumental in establishing the business of Pioneer Seeds in Pakistan and our currently in a joint venture with them. The market size for imported hybrids, which is what our focus will be, is estimated around Rs. 7 - 8 billion and it is a growing market. Corn has the largest share at 34% followed by sunflower and potato at 9% each and rice at 7%. The entire fruits and vegetables market has a share of 27% and the fodder market at 16%.
SEEDS DEVELOPEMENT - HYBRID RICE
Utilizing our existing pesticide sales force, we have been selling a hybrid sweet sorghum (cattle fodder) seed by the name of Graze King. In four years we have quadrupled its sales. We have closed the current season with a sale of over 250 MT’s (5% market share) which is almost double from the previous year and second only to ICI’s Jumbo which is the market leader at 370MT. Our goal is to cross ICI in 2009. We have recently also introduced, in small quantities, vegetable and fruit seeds.
